Kama Money

Kama Money is founder of Port Alberni Sketchbook, creating loose pen and watercolour sketches of your favourite local places: Alberni Valley businesses, homes and landmarks. After a long artistic hiatus, Kama has picked up the art supplies again while on treatment for stage IV colon cancer. She finds drawing and painting calming for her nervous system, and provides her with something creative to do while off of work.

As a teenager, Kama took private watercolour lessons with Karen Poirier, and was voted as ‘Most Artistic Female’ by her grade 12 class at ADSS. She went on to complete a minor in Art Education at VIU and UVIC with her teaching certificate. After graduation, Kama went on to teach high school art at ADSS, Eighth Avenue Learning Centre and South Surrey/ White Rock Learning Centre. Although she was surrounded by art supplies and artistic students, most of her time was spent on working one-on-one with students and paperwork. There wasn’t much time to be artistic herself. Now that Kama is off on leave from work, her schedule has opened up to start painting again. Heavily influenced by the “Urban Sketcher” movement, Kama tries to overcome her perfectionist nature by completing most pieces in just one to three sittings. She is fascinated by how familiar places can create strong emotional responses in viewers, especially those in her beloved community of Port Alberni.

Kama is active on social media, and would love to connect with you at @PortAlberniSketchbook on Facebook and Instagram.
