Nik Burton is a multifaceted, Mexican dual-citizen artist who lives, works, and plays in the Alberni Valley. Deeply connected to his Indigenous Mexican heritage, his creative practice is guided by a desire to acknowledge life’s darker moments while actively bringing more light into the world—an approach inspired in part by his greatest muse, Frida Kahlo. At the core of his work is an embrace of life’s inherent duality: a belief that light and darkness exist in constant relationship, each giving meaning to the other.
Nik’s artistic expression spans a wide range of mediums, including acrylic and charcoal, fully handmade and hand-painted drums, culinary arts, photography, performing arts, and drag. Underpinning this diversity is a deep love of creating and a commitment to sharing that joy with others. Over the years, he has toured extensively with Vancouver Island Regional Library, bringing drag performances, storytelling, music, and art-making to communities across the region. He has also appeared in multiple productions with the Portal Players Dramatic Society, including Always a Bridesmaid and Little Shop of Horrors. His achievements further include carrying the Olympic torch during the 2010 Winter Olympics Torch Relay and being named Best Male Vocalist in BC at the BC Interior Jazz Festival.
When he’s not performing as his drag persona, Frida Kahl Ho (pun intended) (or Miss Frida when working with children), Nik stays rooted in the community through his work as Executive Assistant at the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce and Administrative Assistant with the Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley.
You can find his drag work on Instagram (@fridakahlho) and YouTube (@fridakahlho), where he shares recurring singing and cooking series.
