I have been a potter for over 50 years. I started with night school classes at ADSS, where I fell into the “madness” of clay.
My work is functional and sculptural, made on the potter’s wheel or by hand-building. I am also an avid gardener. Dirt or clay, I sometimes wonder if this is just the childhood fun of playing in the mud. Despite having played with clay this long, I almost feel like a beginner. There is still so much to do and learn, but never enough time.
For a time, I taught pottery and learned so much from our shared ideas and taking the playful approach of “what if we try this?” I jokingly call my signature brown glaze, “Earth,” my political glaze. Clay and glaze materials are mined. The Albany clay used for the brown glaze came from a mine in Albany, New York, US, that has now run out. Like so many of Earth’s resources, mine is finite.
