Observations and experiences while walking the waterways of Port Alberni were the catalyst for this exhibit. I have always been drawn to water; it’s where I feel free.
The pottery was sparked into life when fresh, vibrant green sea moss popped up on the rocks by the Harbour Quay. That inspiring colour became a vision for the dominant
glassy green glaze, first appearing on my hand-built Rock Boxes. Seagrass flowing with the natural pulse of the inlet became the organic pattern on the wheel-thrown Moon Jars and others, painted with wax resist.
Shapely forms and rims in the Swell series and Double-handed Jugs represent an upward thrust of water, peaking with splashes and ripples. The paintings are primarily done in watercolour, a harmonizing diversion from oils.
Watercolour is like trying to grasp a fish with your hand; soft and slippery. Private moments are created with these little paintings, forcing you to get up close and
see the waterscape and its atmosphere. Breathing in the ocean.
Join me at the end of the pier to watch the inlet vista move us, cutting through the mist.
