Final Chapter for the Annual Book Sale, Saturday May 9th

The Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley is preparing for one final page-turning event as its much-loved Annual Book Sale returns on Saturday, May 9, just in time for Mother’s Day weekend.

Held at the Athletic Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., this year’s sale will mark the last year, closing out a long-running tradition that has raised vital funds in support of local arts and culture. Due to ongoing storage limitations, the organization has made the difficult decision to bring the annual fundraiser to a close after this year.

“This event has been a cornerstone fundraiser for many years, and we know how much it is loved by many in the community. However, we need accessible and dry storage year-long to make it happen. We spent months searching high and low, but nothing was able to be secured.” Angela, the Arts Council administrator explains. “ While it’s bittersweet, we’re excited to make this final sale a memorable one, and focus on a literary-focused celebration to replace it.”

Unlike previous years, the 2026 sale will be a one-day-only event, reflecting the reduced capacity for storing and sorting donations. As always, visitors can expect a wide selection of gently used books across all genres, with something for every reader.

At the end of the day, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., community groups are invited to stop by and pick up remaining books by donation—an effort to ensure nothing goes to waste while supporting other local initiatives.

The Arts Council is also extending an invitation to local authors to participate in the event by hosting a table. This offers a unique opportunity to connect with readers, showcase local talent, and be part of the final celebration. Interested authors can sign up by emailing admin@alberniarts.com.

Community members looking to contribute can donate gently used books at the Visitor Centre, using the large white wooden drop box located outside, or in person during office hours (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) inside the Visitor Centre. Those with larger donations, such as multiple boxes are asked to call ahead at (250) 724-3412 to arrange drop-off.

Volunteers are also needed to help move, sort, and assist on the day of the event. As a small thank-you, volunteers will have the chance to take home a few books of their own. Anyone interested in lending a hand is encouraged to get in touch by phone or email.

As the final chapter of this cherished fundraiser approaches, the Arts Council invites the community to come out, stock up on great reads, and celebrate the impact this event has had over the years.
